Amwell Intune warning: Remote Wipe Capability on Mobile Devices

Overview

This page addresses the following warning message that displays when a Amwell account is added to or updated on a mobile device:

"Adding an Exchange account will allow the Exchange administrator to remotely manage your device.  The administrator may collect personal data, add/remove accounts and restrictions, list, install and manage apps, and remotely erase data on your device."

What does this message mean?

When you add a new or updated Amwell account to your mobile device, the above message may be displayed, saying the Exchange administrator can remotely manage your device, including remotely erasing data (also known as wiping). This language is provided by Microsoft and cannot be changed by the Amwell or other organizations.

The Microsoft MDM system behind the Amwell service known as "Microsoft Intune" includes a remote device wipe capability. “Microsoft” provides this functionality as a means to safeguard the device (and more specifically, companies data), from unauthorized access, theft, larger attacks, etc. The scope of the device wipe capability depends on whether you want access to your organizationsl email account on your mobile device and, if so, how you are using yourcompany account on your mobile device.

Amwell ITs approach to enrollment can be summarized in the following bullets.

  • Amwell may have the capability in certain cases to wipe the entire device however have only ever performed one wipe on request by a user who has their phone stolen while on vacation
  • Amwell does not have the ability to see or touch personal data on your phones such as personal photos, music, third party email, external messaging apps etc.
  • Upon leaving Amwell your access to Amwell resources on your phone will cease to work and will disappear from your phone without impacting other personal data.
  • The stipend paid to all US based Amwell FTEs does not mean you have to use your primary device in this enrollment.  Many have chosen to use a secondary device for this purpose to separate work and personal life.

Amwell IT will never use these features without the permission of the user. Users can request assistance or have any further questions answered by  contacting the IT Helpdesk.
